Forbidden - Jacquelyn Frank After reading the Nightwalkers, Shadowdwellers, Dark Hunter, Black Dagger Brotherhood, and Immortals After Dark series back to back, then coming around again to the Nightwalkers... I was reminded why I love this genre. The mythologies are so complex, mixed with our "every day" mythologies and histories, that you have zero problem immersing yourself in these worlds for a short time.

I don't like comparing authors - because they all have a distinct voice - but Jacquelyn Frank has a distinctly feminine tone in comparison to other popular authors in the paranormal romance genre. While other authors shift equally between the voice of the hero and the heroine, masculine and feminine, you stay in the mind of the heroine almost exclusively. Her heroines are complicated yet highly relatable. And there is such a sophistication to her writing that you do not feel forced along in the story, but that you are easily transitioning from one plot point to the next.

The concept of the Bodywalkers is so entangled with the concepts of reincarnation, the spirit living on in another form, the afterlife, coexistence, symbiosis, real magic... and Egyptian history and legends... yet you never feel that the premise isn't completely plausible.

Lovely story. I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading the rest of this spin-off series.

And a great quote:

“As an American, you make choices every day for others by supporting your government and its excursions or military actions into other countries. When you buy coffee at the same café every morning, you are choosing to support that business. When you pass judgment on the girl your brother starts to date, you affect his life. When you work for your boss, you choose to support him in his endeavors, as well as everyone else his business touches. You make choices for others every day. The difference is that now you are beginning to realize it. And now you are beginning to own it.” -- Vincent, Jacquelyn Frank's "Forbidden"
